FEA – Mactan First Graduation and Barbecue Party

Firstwellness English Academy – Mactan Branch opened Feb. 4.  So one school week after that on Feb. 8 was their first graduation. There was also barbecue party. As the entire school director, I was invited of course. So I finished what I had to do last Friday so I can go there in the afternoon. It was a good decision, I did not regret going there. They prepare barbecue — hotdogs, chicken, pork, and rice and soft drinks.

FEA Mactan graduation is quite unique. They had it near the poolside which is “cool”. You can hear the water splashing! It was very relaxing. Right now, FEA Mactan only has 5 students. The population is few but in the coming months, there will be more because the are many available rooms.  Their accommodation rooms are bigger and nicer than that of Verbena and the scenery is also very relaxing — you can see the horizon. Moreover, the air is fresher to breathe. But maybe you will get darker because the sun-tanning is tempting. 🙂

FEA Mactan solely follows the Academic System I develop in Verbena. This way, if students want to transfer from either each campuses, it would be easier to continue the lesson. The same tests are given and so the same way of assessing the students’s level is also conducted. The teaching resources are almost identical from books to cd’s and others. Practically, it’s the same. Some of the teacher in Mactan are also from Verbena which lives nearer the place so they requested to be transferred. This is ensure from the management side that the transition would be smoother as possible. And true enough, for the Academic department, the system went well starting from day one.  There only just minor adjustments in terms of familiarization of the resources and adaptation of the system to the new setting, but other than that — it is ready to sail away! The entire FEA Mactan Team is ready to serve you. The Japanase Manager there is Yuto and the Academic Coordinator is Karissa.

I have to visit Mactan branch regularly, at least once a week to check out the operation of the Academic System and other stuff. The last time I visited there was Friday. I asked our previous student from Verbena-Cebu Branch how he is and he was smiling saying “No Problem”. It is also very fun to go there and meet new students!

I hope to see all of you in either one of our branches. You can choose which branch you would like to study — or if you want to enjoy both, you can stay at both places! See you all!

FEA Students’ and Teachers’ Dinner Party

Once in while student together with teachers go out to have fun! After studying and working hard, what we all need is a time to relax and let it loose!

In the  picture below, it this was a dinner celebrating a goodbye. In Firstwellness English Academy, we often have farewell parties usually in the form or dinner. And yes it is usually buffet so everybody can pig out and become bloated. After all, that is what buffet is for.

On this night, we went to PINO RESTAURANT. Pino restaurant is a Filipino Restaurant which serves authentic Filipino food. Recently, it ranked no. 8 the Best Restaurant in Cebu . They have wide choices of beef, pork, fish, vegetables,  and oysters. Their desserts are  also delicious but maybe for Japanese it might be something they have not tasted! They serve “maja” which is a sweet jelly-like cake made from coconut’s milk and flour, “kunchinta” which is also made from coconut’s milk, flour and sugar; and they also serve fresh fruits and cakes.  So… yummy! (I kept going back to the dessert area. hahaha)

The restaurants facilities are also very clean. The service is fast and the waiters are very accommodating here. (By the way, the GM is my brother so that’s why. hahaha) But its honestly clean and the staff is prompt to give you what you asked. They are also very polite from the moment we entered ’till we left. They were always smiling. (I guess my brother trained them to do that all the time. hahahah Smile all the time!)

After eating and eating and eating, we continued to eat. Hahaha! Until our stomach asked our mouth “Are you crazy?”. But our mouths remained chewing. So after all the eating, talking, and picture taking, we went to a Karaoke. We stayed up late that night. We partied and sang like there is no tomorrow. Teachers and students were drinking and laughing and singing. It was a lot of fun! FEA people went crazy over dancing with outrageous steps from modern to very old traditional Japanese steps – like planting rice or something like that.

(I only have few picture because I took most of the pictures here. Next time, I wont take pictures anymore. 🙂

The good thing about with FEA students and teachers is that no matter how hard we party, respect and decency is always intact. This is something other schools do not possess. 🙂

Perhaps next week there will be another dinner-party again with students and teachers. So it is really difficult to be on diet. But I guess that best way is to dance non-stop for 3 hours after eating.  Why not?

Verbena Capitol Suites – FEA Location

Verbena Capitol Suites

Firstwellness English Academy of FEA is housed at Verbena Capitol Suites specifically at Don Gil Garcia Extension, Capitol Site, Cebu City. On the map above, we can see that Verbena is situated at the heart of the city. Yes it is very convenient place to stay.

It is very near to malls — the nearest mall is Robinson Mall where it takes only for 10 minutes on foot because I walk slowly and I am short. But if you walk fast, you can reach the mall in 5 minutes. Ayala Malls takes 10 – 15 minutes by jeepney or taxi.

Two blocks away from Verbena Suites is Chong Hua Hospital. This is one of the best hospitals in Cebu which is internationally accredited. It takes 2-3 minutes by taxi. The plug down rate is 40 pesos so from Verbena to Chonghua maybe you will have to only pay 47.50 pesos. That near! Another neared hospital is Cebu Doctors Hospital which also a very good hospital (Chong Hua and Cebu Doctors are considered the best hospitals in Cebu City) is located around Verbena Area. On the map above, I squared the location with the name “HOSPITAL”. That is where Cebu Doctors Hospital is located.

There are many banks around the area. The banks include – METRO BANK, BPI BANK, BDO, LAND BANK, RCBC and PNB. So monetary transaction here is quite easy.

This place is also near Christian (Roman) Catholic Church. The nearest is Capitol Parish Church which takes about 5 minutes by taxi. You can pass this going to Ayala Mall.

Mango Square an area where bars, clubs and restaurants are located. It is one area that is so alive at night! People who wants to party, drink, dance and simply have fun must not misss this place. Luckily, the place is just a few minutes away from Verbena Capitol Suites. It takes about 5 minutes by taxi or 10 minutes on foot. It’s near Robinson Mall.

Studying in Cebu is so much fun but hat you must consider first before anything else is safety and convenience of life. For instance, when you need to buy food, shampoos, clothes — it isn’t so ideal to spend so much time on this.  You can rather spend time on something else worthwhile. Staying at FEA can help you save time geographically. Everything you need is just next door.

FWEA – Academic Proficiency Graph

Now, FWEA academic system created a new visual method of the student’s English Proficiency Level which presents the perfect score of each part of the test — namely Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — correlating it with your own score. On the left side of the graph shows the average level of your test. Below is the level description which states the the sample level of the student is Pre-Intermediate. In addition, the name of the evaluator, Miss D (me) ^^ is placed because at times, when I am not around the next in rank can do the evaluation instead of me.

The graph is given together with the final schedule of the student the next day. The student is instructed to show this to all teachers so teachers will also have an idea of their real English level before they start the lesson proper. Another copy remains at my office, (Academic Office) just in case teachers would want to refer in the future. If the student does not understad the proficiency graph and what it represents teachers can assist them in understanding the facts presented.

I hope the through this factual graph, students would be enticed to level up since visually they now have a picture of where they are in English.

Fwea’s Friendly Environment

Studying in foreign country can be at times lonely and well, sometimes it can really be boring too! That is why it is necessary to stay in a school where you can find comfort during your stay aside from the quality education you are looking for. Living in a school with a friendly environment can be so much help in your studying. Environment plays a vital role in learning. By this, I mean not just how big the classroom is, how comfortable the chair is or how big the building is. What I truly mean by comfort is if you can go along with people living the place.

In the school I am currently directing, First Wellness English Academy so far the living conditions here are fairly nice. All Japanese students get along with each other well – whether they are newly arrived students or senior students that have been staying for months already. There seems to be no conflict at all. The respect each other’s privacy at the same time they go out all together for dinner and drinks. There is absolutely no overpowering of each other instead I can see students helping each other learn  English and cope with loneliness. That’s something impressive about FWEA!

Right now, we have on Mongolian student which is welcomed by all Japanese students. There is no discrimination of races, not a bit. Cool, huh? About a month ago, we also had Korean-Japanese students are he was treated fairly by all students. Teachers as well do not give impartial treatment to students. All students are friends with teachers. Whatever race you have, it doesn’t really matter in FWEA.

It is also amazing how everybody can be friends in First Wellness English Academy. Age is just a number as they as say. The school proves it. We have students who are 61, 65 and late 50’s who goes out with younger students. There is indeed equality no doubt.

Everybody can be a friend at FWEA. If you plan to study in Cebu, choose a school that can also be your HOME and you can lively with a smile.

What is Placement Test?

A lot of students wonder what placement test is beause most Japanese students only understand Level Test. Basically, level test and placement test are the same.  Placement test is a test that students take in a school before they start their regular class. Level test is the same. Both tests checks the level of the student so technically only the terms mattters. 🙂 Do not be confused.

In First Wellness English Academy, the Placement test is consists of speaking, listening, reading and writing. To tabulate:

LISTENING – 20 minutes

READING  and WRITING – 50 Minutes

SPEAKING – 10 to 15 Minutes

All tests must be taken before regular class can be started. In school, this is also the basis of book recommendations and class designation in group classes. FWEA test is designed to assess which area in their English competency needs improvement and at the same time which area the student possesses stronger capabilities. If the student scores low in listening, the academic office would then advice the student to take more classes focusing on listening. The same goes for other skills.

Based on experience, most student would want to improve their speaking skills in English than anything else.  This is because most students believe that speaking is the key point in judging whether the he or she is good in speaking skills. Speaking English is what matters to most students. At times, they do not even care how they write, how they spell as long as they can utter English and be understood — it’s enough.

However, my advice to all students is to improve  all the four skills because they can go hand in hand later. Absence of one might also affect the other skills.
